2016-2017 Academic Year: “Science and Art”

DEADLINE for Doctoral Student and Mid-Career Faculty Applications:
April 21, 2016 no later than noon.

The Committee for Interdisciplinary Science Studies invites applications from recently tenured-faculty, CUNY doctoral students, and PhDs eligible for Postdoctoral Fellowships who would like to participate in a research seminar on the theme “Science and Art”.

Science and art are often treated as contrasting activities, but there are many ways by which they can come into contact.  We are seeking researchers from the CUNY community whose work brings science and art together in some way.  The chosen fellows will participate in a year-long seminar, meeting on alternate weeks, to share work in progress.  Examples of relevant kinds of research include:

• Psychology of the arts: behavioral research on fine art, music, or performance
• The sociology of art, music, and fashion
• The use of imagery in science, either historically or in the present day
• The impact of science on literature
• Empirically informed philosophy of art
• Cultural and biological evolution of the arts
• Neuroaesthetics: how brain mechanisms relate to aesthetic experiences
• Interactions between the histories of science and art.

DOCTORAL DISSERTATION STUDENT FELLOWSHIP

Applications are invited from doctoral candidates in the humanities and humanistic social sciences such as anthropology, religion, sociology, philosophy, political science, history, psychology, English, art history, and comparative literature who engage our seminar topic, “Science and Art”. This fellowship is only open to Graduate Center doctoral candidates (i.e. you must be Level III. There are no exceptions). Fellows will be expected to participate in the Committee seminar as well as ongoing lectures and symposia. It is a condition of the fellowship that fellows leave this time free in their schedules for these meetings.

With generous support from the Provost’s Office and Graduate Center, CUNY, successful candidates will be granted $10,000 total for Fall 2016 – Spring 2017 in return for a commitment to fully participate in the work of the Committee and in the biweekly seminar. The basis for selection of participants will rest primarily on the relevance to the overall project of the work proposal submitted by applicants. In accord with the interdisciplinary aim of the program, selections will also be made with an eye to maintaining disciplinary diversity.
